March 10th, 2010 by

With all the news regarding interest rates, global financial recession and tightening our belts people have started to really investigate car or truck lending options in greater numbers than ever before. This could be a choice however it could also mean that someone buying a new automobile will be paying out on interest for a whole lot longer. Less of every monthly payment goes toward the principal debt which of course means more will be owed on the auto.

If they trade in before they’ve paid off sufficient costs on the car loan, they might actually owe much more on the auto than the worth of the car. Together with shopping for interest rates on car or truck loans, you should try and pre-qualify for a loan of preference prior to shopping. Know your actual credit worthiness and try to thoroughly clean it up ahead of trying to get a car loan. Get those marks off of your score and you may save money over the long term.

Pre-owned Car Loans

Used cars are attaining a bigger share of the current market. Finance costs may actually be lower for these types of cars and trucks as they have taken the largest hit to their cost when they drive out of the lot.

There are actually pitfalls to buying a used car in addition to advantages.

The Mercedes SLK R170 Remains a Blast

March 10th, 2010 by

The marketing brains at Mercedes originated this acryonym from Sporty, Light, and Short (or Kurz in German). The SLK R170 was a smaller and lighter version of Mercedes SL sports car. The SLK R170 was first produced in 1996, and its fans were immediate. The SLK was a sales powerhouse, starting with 50,000 units in its first production year. However, time and competition aged this car. The car was going up directly against the Audi TT, unfavorably. Also, it became a technological has-been.

The SLK’s electrical hard top remains an interesting feature, but its engine is reviewed as rough and harsh. The steering mechanism came for the C-class chassis, the recirculating ball steering, which was sloppy.

Comparing to rivals, the TT Roadster, the BMW Z3, and the Alfa Romero Spider, the Mercedes SLK still visually stands out. While the engine could be wimpy, this underpowered engine is preferred by North Americans for relaxed driving styles.

The Mercedes SLK R170 was one of the first retractable hardtop convertibles. If you’re not a fan of turbulence, you’ll still need a windscreen. This innovative hard top follows in the footstep of the Mitsubishi 3000 GT Spyder, Peugeot 206cc, Lexus SC, Mercedes SL Class, and the Chrysler Sebring.

To address the shortcomings, the 2/3 liter Kompressor came out in 2000. This car gained extra power, different styling on the body, and improved handling. The engine fixed some of its initial roughness. Mercedes did improve the transmission experience, smoothing out the shifting. A six-speed transmission was installed, which came over straight from the E-class. There was an automatic option, providing five speeds. With the top down, you’ll still have a lot of turbulence, unless you install a need a windscreen. Then, the chassis was upgraded for better handling and safety improvements.

None of these changes are big or grand, being small changes over time. The Mercedes SLK R170 is a classic car that holds up well with time.

History of the Chrysler Sebring

March 10th, 2010 by

The first Sebring came out in 1995 as a midsize coupe. The Sebring shared the same underpinnings with its cousin, the Mitsubishi Galant. Along with the LX and LXi coupes, they were propelled with a 163-hp, 2/5 liter engine, mated to a four speed automatic transmission. At the time, the vehicle’s best attributes were its sporty and purposeful exterior styling and roomy (for a coupe) interior. The headroom in the Sebring could fit basketball places, and the trunk size would fit all of their luggage. Also, for top-down driving, you certainly needed a windscreen.

Back in 2001, Chrysler brought out a brand new spanken Sebring sedan model, along with some returned coupes and convertibles. As before, the coupe shared a platform with Mitsubishi. The most powerful selection was a 3/0 liter engine, producing 200-hp. The LXi Couple was the Sebring’s initial offering. A standard in convertibles (and LXi Sedans) was the impressive 2/7 liter, V6 thumping engine. A 2/4-liter four-cylinder was also available. The Sebring was given high marks for its external looks, engine reliability, and consumer options.

Minor updates followed in successive years, and Chrysler shuffled the trim levels on a nearly annual basis: The familiar Sebring LX and LXi models ultimately gave way to GTC, TSi, Touring and Limited trim levels. Note that the Sebring coupe was discontinued after the 2005 model year, while the Sebring convertible and sedan continued through 2006. For the convertible owners, a good purchase is a windscreen.

This second evolution of the Sebring was good at the start, but competitors soon introduced more compelling models. Taking the Sebring out for a test drive wasn’t pleasant; the ride was stiff and harsh. If you’re looking for a used Sebring, then you’ll have the best luck with the late 90’s and early 2000s  Despite the Sebring’s drawbacks, one will still be pleased with this car.  The Sebring will always have a fond place in car driver’s hearts.

Gas Vs Diesel

March 10th, 2010 by

Cost; Due to high compression ratios and resulting high cylinder pressure in diesel engines, they must be built to withstand a lot more consequence than gas engines.  The parts which might be spruced up include a thicker block and cylinder heads, pistons, crankshaft, and valves, which may be very costly indeed.

When it comes to the cost, gas wins this one by far.  Diesel costs a lot more to own than gas, which is one of the main reasons why people often choose gas over diesel.

Fuel cost; Diesel fuel is very simple to refine, taking less time to get from raw petroleum to final product from gas, passing on a lower price than that of gas.  However, within the united states, diesel is priced exactly the same or simply a lttle bit below regular unleaded gas.

Noise and vibration; Despite many improvements in noise isolation and engine noise technology in trucks over the last 10 years, diesels are still much louder and shake a lot more than gasoline powered vehicles.  At idle, the clatter and shake of diesel vehicles are clearly noticeable, while it can be hard to tell if the gas engine is even running.

Cold weather; If you’ve tried to start a diesel engine on the cold day, you will know gas is by far easier to start. Diesels don’t have spark plugs like gas engines do, since the fuel is ignited once it’s injected into the cylinder that’s already under pressure. When it gets cold, the air is not hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel.

Upkeep; Maintenance on the diesel vehicle is more costly, thanks to a lot of things including the larger volume of oil in the engine and the fact that fuel filters and water separators should be serviced more regularly than gas vehicles.  Gasoline engines have a bigger advantage due to extended service periods on spark plugs, engine oil, and even antifreeze.

Making that final choice between gas and diesel comes down to what you’ll do with your vehicle and where you live.  If you use your vehicle for quick, fast acceleration and rarely ever haul heavy loads, and don’t intend to keep your vehicle past 100,000 miles, you should consider buying a gasoline vehicle.

Gas runs smoother, fuel is very simple to find, and they are easier to start in cold weather.  However, if you plan to tow, value good fuel economy and plan on racking up a lot of miles, then you’ll want to buy a diesel.

Price is also an important consideration, as diesel vehicles could be a bit more expensive than gas.  When you are not worried about price, then diesel might be the best choice.  For trucks, diesel is by far the superior choice for individuals who want to haul heavy loads on the frequent basis.

I highly recommend you also look into my other guide on lifted chevy and jacked up trucks.

Diesel Trucks Vs Gas Trucks

March 10th, 2010 by

If you plan to make use of your truck just like a car, desiring quick, quiet acceleration and rarely ever haul a heavy load and do not plan to it for a long period, you might want a gasoline engine.  Gas engines run smoother, fuel is easier to get, and gas engines start easier in cold weather.

If you are planning to utilize your truck for towing, value good fuel economy and plan to put lots of miles on it, you may want a diesel.  The purchase price to buy a diesel truck is actually high, whilst they can provide you with a lot in return.

Below, you will find a more important vehicle manufacturers and what they provide you with.

Dodge; the 2500 and 3500 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty trucks are the newest 3/4 and 1 ton trucks on the road.  Back in 2002, the Ram didn’t have enough power with the 245 HP 9.5L.  Dodge promised stronger engines for the 2500/3500 platform and they delivered on that promise. The new base engine is the 5.7L gasoline V-8 that is not only the strongest engine with the group at 345 HP but also revives the well known and historical Hemi name.

Ford; Ford helped push the 3/4 ton and 1 ton truck target where it is today when it introduced it is international engineered power stroke diesel back in 1994.  Before 1994, these diesels were poorly built and no match for the big inch gasoline engines. From 1994 to 2002, over 70% of super duty Fords were sold with the optional 7.3L V-8 diesel engine.  This engine helped that will put Ford among the leaders in diesel trucks, as they had more than they needed to dominate the marketplace.

Chevrolet/GMC; the GM 2500/3500 twins Silverado HD and Sierra HD both come standard with GM’s 6.0L gas engine V-8.  This engine is ideal for 3/4 ton trucks where towing is not an issue.  The upgrades start with the 8.1L gas V-8 that is based on Chevrolet’s venerable big block engine.

Through the years, diesel trucks have proven to be effecient with mileage, great for towing, and easy on maintenance.  Unlike gas engines, diesel engines would not have spark plugs, and that means you won’t need to have them tuned up near as much as gasoline engines.

For individuals who love to haul heavy loads on a frequent basis, diesel is what you want.  You will get quite a few miles per gallon, and diesel trucks are made to go 250,000 miles or more before the engine needs to be rebuit, making them a purchase that is a lot more than worth your cash.

I highly recommend you also see my other tips guide on lifted truck and commercial truck parts.

Ford Thunderbird – Blast From the Past

March 10th, 2010 by

OMG! This Thunderbird isn’t your old-folks car. It was over fifty years ago when Ford first came out with the Thunderbird. Looking back to the 50′. Today, we have plenty of new car options, and people still in masses.

The roadster version of the Thunderbird was introduced back in 2002. Ford read the tea-leaves and brought back the retro style of the Ford Thunderbird. There’s no mistaking this version from its mid-50’s roots. Everyone flocked the the signature porthole windows. Buyers responded most favorably in the first year, and then declined each year afterwards. After a short four year, Ford shut down production of this wonderful car.  {This was always a great car, as long as you have a windscreen to tame the wind while driving top-down}.

This car was manufactured on a smaller version of the rear wheel drive platform, also used for the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type sedans. The only option for an engine under the hood was the 3.9 liter, V8, which was also shared with the LS. To make life simple, there was also only one option for the transmission, a five speed manual or automatic. Ford was generous with the standard equipment, including four-wheel disc brakes, side airbags, and catching 17-inch alloy wheels. If you’re in the mood to splurge, then you can get the fancy chrome wheels and traction control. A must-have accessory to keep down the significant turbulence is a windscreen, or see convertible windscreen reviews for more options. This new Thunderbird is generous with the space, both inside the compartment and trunk. This car does tend to be heavy, compromising handling on curvy roads and acceleration.

Those who missed out the first time around will find active markets for used Thunderbirds. Those in the know go for the extra power, while those wanting comfort seek a stiffer chassis.

Will the Solstice Die along with Pontiac?

March 10th, 2010 by

Upon its government loans, General Motors is being forced to ruthlessly shed its dead weight, which means eliminating its low selling brands of Saturn, Hummer, Saab, and Pontiac. Among the classic Pontiac cars made famous are the great muscle cars, the GTO and Trans Am, made famous in many movies.  Who can ever forget the movies Smokey and the BanditorTwo Lane Blacktop with a raging GTO?  Also on the block is the big selling Pontiac Solstice. While the Solstice is a popular car, it’s not strong enough by itself to save the entire Pontiac line. The elimination of this car would effect now only the entire assembly line upon it and its parts suppliers, but those business which also sell after market parts (such as the Pontiac Solstice windscreen / windblocker / wind deflector).

Convertible owners are enthusiast about their car, and sharing their love for it. The Pontiac Solstice started life to strong editorial reviews and passionate owners. As quick as the announcmenet of the end of Pontiac came, the online community responded to save the Solstice (see SaveTheKappa). This website was quickly started by passionate owners to persuade General Motors that the Solstice is worth preserving.  Although brand new, fans are already flocking to this website, and activity will certainly pick up as the Solstice’s demise becomes near.

Unfortunately, it’s simply too early to tell what might happen. There are still a lot of gyrations left to play out in this interwoven business saga.  As far as the Pontiac Solstice itself, it’s fate is still unknown. Right now, General Motors envisions shutting the Pontiac division down by 2010, yet perhaps keeping profitable lines active. Keeping the Solstice going would be a big relief to the fans, the workers, and the businesses of this car. The Solstice’s eventual life is still up in the air, yet this car will always have a vast group of followers dedicated to it.

Chrysler Crossfire Still Wows

March 10th, 2010 by

The Crossfire is available as either a two-set coupe or a roadster (in which case, you’ll need a Crossfire windscreen (windblocker wind deflector). The Crossfire is based upon the Mercedes Benz SLK chassis. The result is a sluggish car with unresponsive steering and poor aerodynamics. People were balanced in their compliments: they like the outside of the car, but hated its inside. Most other automobiles in the same class provide a cockpit that didn’t have such a plastic-feel, as the Crossfire. Finally, the car’s performance is mediocre as well. The Crossfire is sluggish for speed and acceleration, and it just drinks the gas.

The Crossfire came out in the summer of 2003 as a coupe only. Then, the two seater roadster then followed in 2005. A new high performance SRT6 version was introduced latter in fall, providing a supercharged 3/2 liter, V6 engine. The Crossfire delivers an impressive 330 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. One minor bummer was the SRT6 came only with an awkward five speed automatic transmission. Lastly, upgraded suspensions components were added, at a cost of ride comfort.  Finally, performance tires can significantly improve the handling profile of the Crossfire, adding a lot more fun and glees of fun.

Listening to pricing feedback, a stripped down model was also added in 2005. Also, new colors, trim levels, and aluminum wheel styles were added. Even with all these different styles, the roadster is still the most popular version.

The Crossfire has been dropping off the sale significance for the last two years, so 2009 may be its last year in production.  The roadster will most likely remain the most popular version of the Crossfire.  There isn’t a strong prosepct for this car in the collector marketplace.  This car will certainly be missed by its fans and the auto industry alike.
